5 Star RatedLicensed and Insured20+ Years ExperienceFree Estimates

Baldwin County sits on the front line of every Gulf hurricane season. Hurricane Sally made a direct hit on Gulf Shores in September 2020 with sustained winds of 105 mph, leaving tens of thousands of residents without power for 7 to 10 days. Hurricane Ivan in 2004 struck with 130 mph winds and caused catastrophic damage to the power grid across the entire coastal region. A whole home standby generator hardwires into your electrical panel and natural gas or propane line, automatically kicking on within seconds of a power loss. You will never need to unpack the cooler or worry about spoiled food, lost AC, or medical equipment failing.

Gulf Shores Electrical is an authorized dealer for Kohler, Generac, Honeywell, and Briggs and Stratton. We size every unit to your actual load including AC, well pump, septic, fridge, and lights, so you get the right generator the first time. Our licensed electricians handle the entire process: site assessment, load calculation, permits, gas line, transfer switch, pad, wiring, and final startup. No subcontracted sales reps. No pressure. Just licensed electricians who show up, do the work right, and stand behind it through every hurricane season.

We also offer natural gas or LP fuel options, coastal grade enclosures built for salt air durability, and Wi Fi monitoring on compatible units so you always know your system's status. Call us at (251) 644-6262 to schedule your free in home assessment.

Three Levels of Storm Preparedness

Not every homeowner needs the same solution. Here is how the three main backup power options compare so you can choose the level of protection that fits your home and your budget.

Level 1

Manual Transfer Switch

A manual transfer switch connects your portable generator to your home's electrical system safely. It isolates specific circuits from the main panel so you can direct power from your portable unit to the outlets and lights you choose — without running extension cords through the house.

What It Does Well

  • Powers selected outlets and lights inside your home
  • Keeps your refrigerator and deep freezer running
  • No extension cords running through doorways or windows

Keep in Mind

  • Cannot power your HVAC system
  • Someone must be home and present to operate the switch
  • Only supplies power to the circuits wired into the transfer switch

Portable generator not included. Customer provides their own unit.

Level 2

Interlock Kit

An interlock kit is a panel accessory that physically prevents the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time. This ensures power cannot back-feed into the utility lines, giving you a safe and code-compliant connection for your portable generator. Note: older panels without a main breaker may require an upgrade before installation.

What It Does Well

  • Lets you alternate between circuits including HVAC or large appliances
  • No extension cords needed inside the home
  • More flexible than a standard transfer switch

Keep in Mind

  • Someone must be home to operate the interlock during an outage
  • You cannot run HVAC and other large circuits at the same time

Portable generator not included. Customer provides their own unit.

Level 3

Whole Home Standby Generator

A whole home standby generator is a permanently installed system that connects directly to your electrical panel and a natural gas or propane supply. When the grid goes down it starts automatically within seconds — powering your entire home as if the outage never happened. No action required from you.

What It Does Well

  • Powers the entire home including AC, pool pump, and appliances
  • Starts automatically — you do not need to be home
  • Runs on natural gas or propane with no refueling during an outage

Keep in Mind

  • Propane-fueled units will stop if the tank runs dry
  • Annual service is required to keep the system reliable when it matters most

For most Baldwin County homeowners, a whole home standby generator is the only option that truly protects your family during a multi-day outage. It is the only level that runs without you being present, powers your AC through a Gulf Coast summer storm, and requires zero effort when the grid fails at 2 in the morning.

Gulf Shores Electrical installs and services all three options. If you are not sure which level is right for your home, call us and we will walk you through it — no pressure, no sales pitch.

We Gave Generators Their Own Team

Keep Your Generator Storm Ready Year Round

A standby generator sits idle 99% of the year and is expected to fire perfectly the one night the lights go out. That only happens with annual service. Our maintenance visits check fuel, oil, coolant, battery, transfer switch operation, and run the unit under load — so we catch problems before the storm does.

We offer Core, Priority, and Total Coverage maintenance plans for air cooled residential units, liquid cooled systems, and commercial generators. See our Generator Service and Repair page for full plan details.

What Our Neighbors Say

"Jason and his crew did an OUTSTANDING job installing my Kohler 26 kw whole house generator and transfer switch. Where many other companies gave me quotes and sales pitches akin to a used car salesman, the owner of this company came out personally and provided the quote and a referral for an LP gas company."

John D.Foley

"We called Jason about installing a generator. We trusted the process and their recommendation of a system. The first few nights we had a power outage and it was such a confirmation of going with this system and using them."

Lisa L.Gulf Shores

"They did all of our electrical work for our custom home construction including a generator, boat house and a pool. They took a great deal of interest in the details and how the electrical would serve our wants and needs for the home."
