Electric shock drowning (ESD) occurs when AC current leaks into the water around a dock, creating a voltage gradient that can paralyze and drown swimmers. It is invisible, silent, and deadly. ESD has killed swimmers at private docks across the country, including in Alabama waters.
The primary cause is faulty or improperly installed dock wiring — specifically, wiring that lacks proper GFCI protection, bonding, and grounding. NEC Article 553 and 682 set specific requirements for dock electrical that are more stringent than standard residential wiring. Many older docks were wired before these requirements existed and have never been updated.
Gulf Shores Electrical installs all dock wiring to current NEC code with GFCI protection on every circuit, proper bonding of all metal components, and equipment grounding conductors on all circuits. If you have an older dock, we strongly recommend an inspection before the next swimming season.
Salt air is the enemy of standard electrical components. Outlets, fixtures, and conduit that work fine inland will corrode and fail within a few years when exposed to the Gulf Coast environment. We use marine-grade, corrosion-resistant fixtures and weatherproof enclosures rated for coastal environments on every dock and waterfront installation.
For properties within a quarter mile of the water, we recommend annual electrical inspections to catch corrosion before it becomes a safety hazard. Our protection plan customers receive priority scheduling for these inspections.
